The majority of white wine from the Northern regions of Spain is fresh and fruity and made from a range of indigenous grapes but increasingly from international varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc. For the Ambiente Tapas Whites of Northern Spain: Discover Box Set we have chosen six whites that we feel walk you through the key grapes and capture the essence of such a large, diverse and to some extent uncelebrated area of white wine production. We have also chosen examples of wines where the winemakers have used oak fermentation and maturation as well as techniques such as lees stirring to add texture and more complex flavour to their whites.
The Ambiente Tapas Whites of Northern Spain: Discover Box Set comprises six 75cl bottles:
Diez Siglos, Sauvignon Blanc 2022 - Rueda (ABV 13%)
Appealing to lovers of New Zealand Sauvignon this wine is pale yellow with familiar greenish hues. The palate is vibrant with juicy grapefruit acidity and herbaceous characteristics.
'La Miranda de Secastilla' Garnacha Blanca 2020 - Somontano (ABV 13.5%)
Somontano – meaning 'under the mountain' – is a little-known but breathtakingly beautiful area of Northern Spain, nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This Garnacha Blanca is pale and bright but its 4-month aging in French oak gives it a smooth and rich palette with complex layers of stone fruit, minerals and spice. A great wine with food.
Veiga Naum, Albariño 2022 - Rias Baixas (ABV 13%)
Albariño is grown in the North West of Spain. It has become a particularly fashionable grape with the highest quality wine produced in Rias Baixas on the Atlantic coast. This wine is a classic example of why Albariño is considered to be Spain's most premium grape variety. On the nose, there is an explosion of floral aromas delicately enveloping a collection of fruity aromas, apricot, ripe citrus fruits and apple. Its well-structured palate is an explosion of apple and stone fruits and some say it has a touch of savoury salinity from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cuatro Rayas, Verdejos 2021 (vg) - Rueda (ABV 13%)
Situated in between Toro and Ribera del Duero, Rueda differs from its neighbouring DOs as it focuses on white wine production. The region's cool continental climate, with cool summer nights, is ideal for Rueda's traditional grape variety, Verdejo. Clean and powerful on the nose, this is an excellent example of the dry and refreshing wines of the region. The palate is full of zingy fresh citrus, grapefruit and herbal flavours.
Beronia Blanco, Viura 2022 - Rioja DOCa (ABV 12.5%)
La Rioja needs no introduction but is often overlooked for its white wines outside Spain. Viura, known elsewhere in Spain as Macabeo, is the classic grape of white Rioja. Highly aromatic and fruit-forward, it is balanced, long and persistent on the mouth with fruit aromas and hints of tropical fruits, pineapple and pear.
Txakoli Rezabal 2022 - Getariako Txakolina (ABV 11%)
Nothing is more representative of visiting the cities and fishing villages of the Basque area of Northern Spain than a chilled glass of Txakoli.
